That’s right- as of April first, California’s mountain snowpack was 165% of the full season average! While many of you are probably still squeezing the last bits of fun out of this amazing ski season, we at IRIE have already turned our thoughts to early season rafting. Now, we’re not saying that you should hang your goggles up just yet, but here are some points to ponder about why lots of winter snow on those peaks means lots of spring and summer rafting enjoyment for you.
Early Season Excitement: Lots of snow, combined with the spring thaw equals more water in the rivers during the early rafting season. This means bigger whitewater and bigger thrills on all the rivers we run here at IRIE. Whether you want to experience Lake Tahoe’s premier class III whitewater run, the Truckee River, or push your limits on the beautiful solitude of the class IV North Fork or Middle Fork of the American River, a “big water” rafting trip has an unforgettable feel and an extra oomph that will exhilarate even the most experienced paddlers.
Extended Seasons on Free-Flowing Rivers: As many of you undoubtedly know, most of the summer whitewater rafting that we do is dependent on dam released water from reservoirs. What you might not know, is that some of the best rafting in California is on free flowing rivers, like the North Fork of the American or the East Fork of the Carson, where lack of dams means that boating only lasts as long as the snowmelt. Savvy recreational boaters and seasoned professionals alike often lament that their spring schedules didn’t line up with narrow “flow windows” on runs like this. Well, the good news for you is that all that extra snow in the mountains this winter equals longer seasons on these classic stretches of river; already got plans for spring break? No problem- we estimate that our “spring” season will last into early July this year!
The Bottom Line: 2011 is going to be an epic boating season! Whether you want unparalleled big water thrills, or the chance to experience wilderness solitude, IRIE has got the trip for you.
